Parade of Plastic Monsters
Cleveland student art competition

Plastic is a monstrous issue. That’s particularly true in Ohio, the #1 producer of plastic in the country. Made from fossil fuels and responsible for 4 times more greenhouse gas emissions than the airline industry (yikes), plastic production is a major driver of climate change.
But it’s also bad for human health. What the industry doesn’t want you to know is that plastics manufacturing releases literal TONS of toxic chemicals every year. Chemicals that are known to cause cancer, asthma, and other major health issues.
So why don’t we just use recycled plastic? Wouldn’t that solve the problem? Unfortunately, plastic recycling in the US is mostly… not working. Believe it or not, only 9% of all plastic that’s ever been made has gotten recycled. That’s barely enough to put a dent in the pollution problem.
And now the industry is claiming that old and risky plastic burning technologies are the magic solution – they even call them “advanced” or “chemical recycling.” But the truth is, “advanced recycling” facilities are costly, mostly ineffective, and release toxic chemicals into our Ohio communities.
We must do better! As The Green City on the Blue Lake, Cleveland can be a leader - not just in plastic production, but in REAL plastic solutions.
